Common emission factors for non-ferrous foundries
An emissions factor is a representative value that attempts to relate the quantity of a pollutant released to the atmosphere with an activity associated with the release of that pollutant. Emissions factors are usually expressed as the weight of pollutant divided by a unit weight, volume, distance, or duration of the activity emitting the pollutant. Emissions factors have long been the fundamental tool in developing national, regional, state, and local emissions inventories for air quality management decisions and in developing emissions control strategies. More recently, emissions factors have been applied in determining site-specific applicability and emissions limitations in operating permits by federal, state, local, and tribal agencies, consultants, and industry. Emission factors for non-ferrous foundries can vary depending on several factors, including the type of metal being processed, the specific processes involved, and the efficiency of the equipment used. Estimating air releases or emissions is an essential part of almost all Construction and Operating Permit applications and renewals. Typically, a foundry must determine both its actual emissions (usually for a specific period of time in the past) and its Potential to Emit (PTE). There are thousands of emission factors available for the criteria pollutants (PM10, SOx, NOx, VOC, and CO) and individual specific chemicals.
