Area MACT Resources

On June 13, 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued final national air toxics standards for smaller-emitting sources, known as area sources, for nine metal fabrication and finishing source categories.These standards affect any new or existing facility that performs metal fabrication or finishing operations which uses or emits compounds of cadmium, chromium, lead,manganese, and nickel; or uses or emits elemental forms of all except lead. The rule covers area sources in the following nine industries:

  1. electrical and electronic equipment finishing operations;
  2. fabricated metal products manufacturing;
  3. fabricated plate work (boiler shops) manufacturing;
  4. fabricated structural metal manufacturing;
  5. heating equipment manufacturing, except electric;
  6. industrial machinery and equipment finishing operations;
  7. iron and steel forging;
  8. primary metal products manufacturing;
  9. and valves and pipe fittings manufacturing.

Facilities affected by this rule perform the same air toxics-emitting operations, and the emissions are controlled in the same way. As such, EPA decided to regulate the sources collectively rather than individually.

4Z MACT Rule Resources - Area Source Standards for Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines

Stationary engines use pistons that alternately move back and forth to convert pressure into rotating motion. They are used in a variety of applications from generating electricity to powering pumps and compressors in power and manufacturing plants. They are also used in the event of an emergency such as fire or flood.The key pollutants EPA regulates from these sources includes formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, methanol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).

 

6Z MACT Rule Resources - Area Source Standards for Aluminum, Copper, and Other Nonferrous Foundries

On June 15, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized air toxics standards for smaller emitting aluminum foundries, copper foundries, and other nonferrous foundries. The final rule regulates emissions of a number of toxic air pollutants, such as beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, and nickel, which are known or suspected to cause cancer, other serious health problems and environmental damage.

 

6J MACT Rule Resources - Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Boilers

On March 21, 2011, EPA issued final emission standards to reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants from industrial, commercial, and institutional boilers located at area source facilities.  An area source facility emits or has the potential to emit less than 10 tons per year of any single air toxic or less than 25 tons per year of any combination of air toxics.  The final rule covers boilers located at area source facilities that burn coal, oil, or biomass, but not boilers that burn only gaseous fuels or any solid waste.  The rule establishes standards to address emissions of mercury, particulate matter (as a surrogate for non-mercury metals), and carbon monoxide (as a surrogate for organic air toxics).
